My path within the IT-sector started on the more technical side but this has changed to more administrative tasks and pure project management. Within project management I try to use my technical background as a way of doing my job as PM better. Being able to understand how things are done, at least the basics, is very important and should not be underrated. Either the title is Technical PM or PM I try to use both technical skills and administrative skills together with project management methodology to get the results. I have been in companies practicing a lot of different methods, but the common denominator of successful experiences has been goal-oriented management. Either way I try to adapt my customers preferences if they have any, or use own methods which are mainly PMI-focused.
